I hate packing, ok I said it! Now we all can move on! Everyone who knows me knows that! My history of moving/traveling/packing/
We all know that big change don’t happen over night but even a small step forward on a topic like this will reduce your stress and give you time and space for more important things – like planing your itinerary. Packing before I started blogging vs. packing after I started blogging looks VERY different! Here are my secretes I’ve been collecting for more then 5 year.
USED TO DO
- I was always leaving packing for the last night / morning depends on my flight. This made whole situation even more stressful and deep down made me hate packing even more.
MY ADVICE
- Pack your stuff at least two days before the flight. That will give you calm and peace without putting unnecessary pressure before the trip even begin.
USED TO DO
- I used to overpack my luggage with stuff I wouldn’t wear a single time. That’s way my suitcase was messy, unorganized and made me feel bad even looking at it.
MY ADVICE
- Take only clothes you will actually need. With few favorite pieces and few classic ones you can’t go wrong. Packing light actually is great! Your bag will be lighter, you will feel better about your packing skills and you leave an extra space in your bag for new souvenirs. Great, isn’t it ?
USED TO DO
- When I’m used to pack there was always a part “what if I would need this !?”. And next second I would find myself packing all the stuff I actually won’t use on my trip. If you questioning it you won’t need it! Golden rule of life, not only traveling.
MY ADVICE
- Check the weather, do this more then few times before your trip! Pack according the forecast for ALL days of your trip. Some day may rain some day may be extremely sunny. Never let the weather ruin your vacation.
USED TO DO
- I remember when I started to travel five year ago I didn’t know much about any part of traveling. We learn by making mistakes but if you can skip some, there is nothing wrong with it. I was always comparing weather in the place where I used to live with every single place on the Earth. I was thinking it’s all quite the same and I was wrong. There are small parts of land, even on a small islands (like Gran Canaria, Iceland, New Zealand ) where weather is changing so rapidly. It’s so hard to predict it!
MY ADVICE
- Don’t think that summer in place where you live is the same like summer, for example in South Asia. Explore web and blogs from people who actually lived there for longer period. According to your newly accepted knowledge pack smart and light.
USED TO DO
- Used to pack too many shoes and snickers as I was thinking I’m gonna use them all. Big NO.
MY ADVICE
- Now when I travel somewhere I always have an idea what kind of pictures I want to take and what kind outfits will fit the best with a destination. According on that I choose what I’ll take with me. Shoes take lot of space in the suitcase so now I’m only take those which will wear. One pair of comfy ones, one pair of classic for a night out and one extra pair, usually cool one or neutral depending which outfits I want to pull out.
USED TO DO
- Used to pack towels or even shampoos. I’ll stop here and take minute to forget how dumb I was.
MY ADVICE
- I’m sure there’s a big number of you who are still doing it. And you will continue doing it even after this post. You are just too stubborn to accept advice and that’s cool. But please make your life easier and believe me on this one. After you have your accommodation booked, rather is hotel/apartment/ hostel you have enough information to know if you will need any of things we are taking about. Towels use a lot of space and shampoos often get broken making a little disaster in your suitcase.
USED TO DO
- I used to pack all the thing in a big suitcase which goes in airplane’s storage. Few times they lost it and I was left to spend a day only with my laptop and clothes which already had on myself. Don’t make this mistake for your own good.
MY ADVICE
- Put your bathroom’s essentials in your backpack as well with some underwear for a first hand and some extra t-shirts. If you traveling from a cold place to a place where temperatures are above 30 C make sure to put a pair of shorts and flip flops. Don’t explore Bangkok in long pants and shirt with a jacket in a hand while everyone is looking strange at you. **it happens and usually when you travel.
USED TO DO
- It’s easier to travel during the summer in terms of packing. Usually only one jacket can use half of your suitcase leaving no space at all for the rest of the clothes.
MY ADVICE
- Pack light but dress “heavy”! Sometimes few pounds change the game. Put a coat on, even tho you don’t need it. But smart “transit game” can give you extra space in your bag and maybe save you from paying extra fees.
